Dear Comrades,
OBSERVE MAY DAY
The Working people around the world would be observing May Day on 1st
May this year too – the 126th May Day.
It is not just a commemoration of the struggle and sacrifice of the
leaders and workers of Chicago. It is life line of the workers
movement across the world. The struggle of the workers of Chicago for
8 hours work, 8 hours recreation and 8 hours rest gave hope and pumped
life into the hitherto scattered and sporadic struggle of workers for
better living conditions. The slogan became a universally accepted
one.
The workers around the world the made substantial advances in this
direction in the one century that followed since the struggle by
workers of Chicago and the 1st observance of May Day in 1885.
The workers in India during and after the colonial rule adopted the
slogan and struggled for its achievement. The workers of Bombay,
Calcutta, Madras and other centres fought relentlessly against worst
kind of repression and made the slogan of 8 hours duty, 8 hours
recreation and 8 hours rest a reality with their supreme sacrifices.
The situation was no different in many government offices – even after
independence. It was of its worst kind in IA&AD. The working time was
only for record sake, never practiced.
The situation that prevailed in the earlier days of industrial
revolution and immediately thereafter is slowly but steadily making a
coming back with the government itself proposing increase in the
working hours.
There are no office timings in any of the IT firms, there are many who
do not even give a holiday on Independence Day or Republic day. And
the government of the day has no qualm in protecting these
anti-national entities.
In IA&AD we have seen the worst kind of witch-hunting and denial of
bare minimum right to even avail a casual leave. The bureaucracy of
IA&AD has one again proved that it refuses to imbibe the spirit of the
Constitution. They speak of rules by breaking every rule and also
norms of civility.
The workers of our country along with other sections of population
are waging a relentless struggle against the policies that are pursued
during the last two decades. One has seen how the neo-liberal economic
policies have caused drain to the exchequer through massive scams. We
are also witness to how the 'watchdog of Indian finances' is reducing
the quantum of its supervision.
We are part of the working class of the country. We realise that only
when the workers rights are protected, the employees will have a
dignified life.
Be a part of the workers movement; join the May Day observance in
your city/station along with the trade unions.
With regards
Yours fraternally
